How Do Shears Work

2010 March 18

Scissors as we all know is a object designed to cut hair, by sliding 2 pieces of sharp flat metal against each other. They have been used to cut more flimsy objects like textile or paper. Basically scissors are used for its speed and precision

The types of scissors we are talking about are called shears, the distinction being that shears are generally bigger than scissors. The history of scissor use was first recorded during ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian times. In those days they basically took a flat piece of metal sharpened it and then bent it so that it would have a spring action when used.

So when you squeezed the handle it brought the blades together and when you released them it would go back to its original form. But the scissors as we know today was started in ancient Rome and china. Despite that, the earlier mentioned spring scissor was used in Europe up until the 16th century.

The name scissors and shears are some times interchangeable, but the fact is shears are usually bigger than scissors. Because of that they are used to cut heavier objects. The other type of sheer is attached to a table and the blades are moved with a lever and are used to cut very strong objects like steel plates.

With the arrival of hair styling, came a different incarnations of the scissor and one of them is the thinning shear. It is similar to ordinary scissors but the flat blades have teeth like a comb and it is used for thinning rather than trimming hair. hence the name. Stylists use it after the haircut for people who have thick hair and give the hair a layered finish look.
