Effective Ways To Train Your Kitten

2010 June 29

You need to train your cat differently than you would train a dog; cats are very different. Cats have unique personalities, and are much more independent than is your average dog. Plus, they have different behaviors that are largely unique to cats.

First, you need to train the cat to stay off of the table. Cats love to jump on the table but you should not allow this. Start when the cat is a kitten, and reprimand the kitten when it gets on the table.

Since you want to discourage your cat from getting onto the table, it is important that you not feed it on the table. It is inconsistent and confusing to tell a cat not to be on a table, then feed it up there so that the cat literally has to get onto the table to eat.

Your cat should also be trained to not bite. Watch where you put your hands on a cat, especially on a female cat. Touching a cat on the hind area can make it uncomfortable, and an uncomfortable or nervous cat may bite you to get you to stop bothering it.

Cats are great pets and it is important to teach them right from wrong at an early age. If you let your cat jump on the table for the first year of its life and then you try to teach them it is not a proper thing to do, they will not understand.

Keep at it. The key to successful training of your cat is to be persistent. Training a cat successfully takes time.

Remember, a well-behaved cat is a more pleasant pet to have. It will make a big difference to your enjoyment of your pet.

Invest some time and effort into teaching your cat the proper way to behave. This will be well worth it. Know at the outset, though, that it won’t happen overnight.
