The Advantages of Selecting a Small Dog

2012 February 8

Small dog training usually means dogs which are small regardless of age. This includes toy dogs or miniature dogs (very small dogs). Often times training small dogs is a more difficult task than training larger dogs but it can vary from breed to breed and dog to dog. Here I will discuss some of the benefits and some of the disadvantages that come with owning and training small dogs come with.

The greatest benefit of small size dogs is that they are quiet friendly to the smaller size apartments and rooms. Hence they get easily used to with the environment of your preference. It is also observed that toy dogs or small dogs are much happier, cuter and active in comparison with other large dogs such as bull dog and German shepherd. It is probably because of their naughty and cute nature. But, being small does not mean they are small in their thinking and intelligence. In fact, there are some small dogs which are quiet intelligent and even intelligent than typical large dogs.

Generally speaking small dogs are fairly easy to live and travel with. Not only do they take up minimal room in a car or truck but they also have smaller space requirements for their accessories such as food and water bowls, food, kennels, etc. Some factors that influence the ability of your dog to learn are breed, bond with owner and motivation. Human factors such as patience, time and consistency will also play a large part in your dogs training.

It is important to understand the importance of correctly training your small dog. Failure to do so may result in the destruction of your house or personal property. One should be consistent when training the dog. As an example it should either never be ok to get up on the couch or it should never be ok to get up on the couch. Occasionally allowing the dog to get up on the couch but not always will lead to confusion on the dogs part and frustration on the owners part.

Often times, small dogs have a tenancy to bark when they hear noises. Some dogs will bark constantly causing a lot of frustration for their owners and neighbors. If you want to cut your dogs barking to a minimum you should begin immediately. Do not wait until your dog has gotten older or this task will be much more difficult than it already is. Decide on a keyword that you will use to correct your dog when it barks and use that same keyword each time. Do not change your wording or your training will not be effective. Use a strong assertive voice but do not scream at the dog. This can lead to the dog thinking it is doing the right thing because you are as agitated as it is regarding the thing that made it bark.
