The Seven Most Popular Dog Breeds In America.

Are you looking for a pet and wondering what the most popular dog breeds are? This article will give you a brief description of the top seven of a hundred popular dog breeds.

7. Dachshunds

Dachshunds (also called Doxies or Dachsies) are a small breed of dog from the Hound Dog Group of dogs. They are very popular pets. They are a bit difficult to train because they seem to be more worried about their comfort than pleasing you. That said, they love comfort and are a good lap dog as a result. And they are an alert dog that will keep watch over your home. Their instinct for hunting can make owning other small pets a bit difficult. Early training and socialization is the key.

6. Boxer

The Boxer is a medium sized member of the working group of dogs. Over the years they have been put to work in many different roles including hunting, courier service, seeing eye dogs and police dogs. This is because they are intelligent dogs that are fairly easy to train. They are energetic and friendly people they know well. They are distrustful with strangers and need good training early on. And they do not need a large yard but they do need plenty of interaction with their owners and regular exercise. A great thing about Boxers is their short coats which are very easy to groom.

5. Beagles

The Beagle is a popular family dog. They love companionship and are very friendly. They can be a bit reserved with new people they meet but they are easily won over because they love making new friends. The Beagle is a medium sized hound dog. Hounds were usually kept in packs so that explains their love of companionship. This love of companionship can lead to separation anxiety if they are left alone for long periods. Like most dogs they require a daily walk for optimal health.

4. Retrievers (Golden)

The Golden Retriever is an excellent breed of dog for those that want a good dog for the children. They are a larger breed of dog from the hunting dog group. Like other hunting dogs they are highly trainable and very loyal. They get along very well with other pets and rarely show any signs of aggressiveness. A Golden is affectionate with everyone it meets, highly intelligent and eager to please. They love playing games of fetch and need regular exercise. These Retrievers have a beautiful, thick coat and do shed quite a bit.

3. German Shepherds

The German Shepherd was bred to be a farm dog and is considered a herding dog breed. These days they are quite popular family pets and are well known to work as police dogs, guide dogs and sniffer dogs. They are very large, attractive dogs with thick coats. So be warned that they shed their fair share. They are a very loyal breed that has lots of energy and an alert protective nature. A dog this large definitely requires good training, socialization and plenty of exercise. If you want a large dog for the family a German shepherd is good to consider.

2. Yorkshire Terriers

The Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie for short) is a Toy dog breed. They are popular for their cute appearance, small size of under 7 pounds and their loyal but feisty attitude. They are one of the most active and energetic of the Toy dogs. The great thing about them is that they do not require a lot of exercise and the exercise they get around the house is often enough. This makes them a great choice for someone that stays at home and is not too active. Another nice feature about Yorkshire Terriers is that they do not shed a lot. Do keep in mind that they live up to 15 years!

1. Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is a medium to large hunting dog breed of dog with a friendly and affectionate personality. They make a good companion in a family home or at a hunter’s side. They do not need a lot of grooming because they have short straight hair. They are highly trainable dogs that live about 12 years. This is a good breed for just about anyone who wants a larger, friendly dog and who has enough time to give it regular exercise.

These seven dogs are always among the most popular dog breeds and are good to consider if you want a dog in your life. But keep in mind that just because something is popular, it does not make it right for you. A dog will live 10 to 15 years so take your time. And please consider your local shelter or dog rescue. I have adopted from shelters with great success in the past.
