Utilizing A Clicker As A Dog Training Method

2010 March 18

As you will discover when starting the training process, everyone thinks their way is the most effective when it comes to teaching your dog good behavior. Once you bring home a puppy of your own, virtually everyone you know who has a dog will offer various suggestions on how to best care for your new pet. It is very similar to what parents go through with the birth of their first child; every person they know has to give their two cents about how to get through the perils of parenthood.

A training method used in the past, known as clicker training, is currently making a comeback, as a productive dog training technique. Essentially, a clicker does just that — it’s a small box-like device that emits a click sound when pressed, and it allows you to show pride and appreciation for your dog whenever they exhibit excellent behavior or restraint. Through this training method, you are teaching the dog to learn the meaning of the clicking noise.

Obviously, the first step is to buy a clicker. In addition, you may want to browse your local pet store for clicker training books; they might help you along with your training. Begin slowly by initiating the process with a simple command like “sit”. Attempt to get your dog to sit on his bottom, as you tell him to “sit”. You should give your dog a little treat, and press the clicker box, as soon as he has followed the command. Do this every time the dog is given a treat – click. That way, your dog will associate the clicker with following your commands.

Recently, there have been many dogs that participate in competitions that are using clicker training. Dogs that you may have seen performing on television, such as those who navigate obstacle courses, are often accompanied by a trainer with a clicker box, standing close by. This can be quite an effective training method, if you consistently utilize the “command, treat, click” technique.

Through the use of clicker training, you are in control of letting your dog know how you feel about his behavior, along with dispensing punishment and praise when it is needed. As a result, the relationship between you and your dog will be strengthened.

It is also important to note that dogs really like and react well to rewards as opposed to discipline, so remember to use the clicker as much as you can to be effective.
