What Dog Owners Should Understand About Crate Training Dogs

2010 February 26

Crate training dogs is a useful tool in house breaking the dog. It also provides the dog a happy and safe place inside your home. If he is frightened he will retreat to his crate rather than under your bed. When you travel, a pet that is in a crate is much safer than one that is running lose in the car.

If the dog is trained correctly, the crate becomes his indoor dog house or den. It will be his favorite place to sleep and to eat. Since it mimics the den, the pet can feel that he is safe in the crate.

It is important that you do not force your pet into a crate. The more your force the pet into the crate, the more they will hate the crate and you will both be miserable.

Put the crate in a room where you will be and allow the pet to explore naturally. Make sure that the door is fastened so that it does not accidentally hit the pet and scare him. You may want to toss in a few treats and allow the pet to explore the crate. Once the pet begins to venture into the crate start feeding him with his bowl inside. Allow the pet to become comfortable in the crate before closing the door.

When you do close the door, make sure to stay in a nearby room so the puppy does not feel like he has done something wrong. Allow plenty of time for adjustment for a happy dog that loves his crate.

If you are house training the dog, the crate becomes an invaluable tool. If the crate is small enough that the dog will not go to the bathroom on one end and then move to the other it is the right size, as long as the pet can stand and turn around.

Each time you take the dog out of his crate, the first thing that should be done is that he is taken outside for a chance to eliminate. After a while he will get the idea that you expect him to go outside to use the bathroom and there should be very few messes in your home.

Very young puppies lace bowel and bladder control, so do not leave them in their crate so long that they have accidents. Be very patient with them so that as they gain control, they will want to go outside to the bathroom. Over time, you will have a pet that becomes an even more special friend.
